Orendain, Cano set up semis clash

TOP SEED Andrew Cano dominated Nicholas Cano, 6-3, 6-2, while No. 3 Betto Orendain scored a walkover win over Claudio Canlas to arrange a semifinal clash in the 3rd Olivarez Cup Age Group 2013 at Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat over the weekend.

No. 4 Vernon Huivonhua nailed the third semifinal berth after a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 win over Ralph Antonio in the boys’ premier 18and-under division.

In the 16-and-under class, Eric Olivarez posted straight-set wins to reach the semis, ousting Mariano Besas, 6-2, 6-0, and Julian Dayrit, 6-1, 6-1. He will next face Jerome Romualdez, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Joseph Cano.

Michael Eala, meanwhile, stunned fourth seed Sohaimen Mama, 6-2, 6-0, to barge into the 14-and-under quarterfin­al round of the event presented by Palawan Pawnshop and held in honor of former Parañaque Mayor Dr. Pablo Olivarez.

Also making the next round were No. 1 Jan Seno, No. 2 Emmanuel Vacalares, No. 3 Cenon Gonzales, No. 5 Emmanuel Fuelas, No. 6 Jacob Martin, No. 7 Gabriel Tiamson, and No. 8 Mimo Tomacruz.

In the girls’ 18-and-under of the event sponsored by Dunlop Sports, Stronghold Insurance and FedEx-Air21, Ma. Angela Sunga saw off Stefi del Rosario, 6-1, 6-2, to set up a quarters duel with top seed Roxanne Resma. Resma, No. 2 Katrina Orteza and No. 3 Isabella Mendoza drew a first round bye.

Nicole Amistada also advanced via walkover against Andie Villarosa for a Last 8 showdown with Orteza. So did Khim Iglupas, who won by default over Therese Capinpin and will take on Jana Hernandez, who tripped Ma. Dominique Ong, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

Iglupas cruised to the semifinals of the 16-and-under class with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Frances Santiago.
