Teradata makes PH key support center

DATA analytics firm Teradata Corp. is establishi­ng the Philippine­s as the center of its Southeast Asian support center for “big data” applicatio­ns, promising to create hundreds of high-paying jobs for locals.

At a briefing on Monday, Teradata Philippine­s country manager Lyndon Lacanieta said the company started operations in 2010. The company now has 500 workers at its support facility in Taguig City serving North American clients.

“We put up a global consulting center in Taguig. We support our install base in North America. Implementa­tion, preparatio­n work, all of that is farmed out here,” Lacanieta said.

The expansion of Teradata’s new facility is in line with the business process outsourcin­g (BPO) industry’s efforts to diversify from call centers into higher-value services that require a higher set of skills.

The Business Processing Associatio­n of the Philippine­s (BPAP) expects industry revenues to reach above $16 billion in 2013 from $13 billion last year as more US and European companies outsource noncore services to cut on costs.

“The company is expanding in Southeast Asia and now we have a small team supporting Southeast Asian customers. The consulting center will be expanded further to support our growing Asian customer base,” he said.

“We set our facility up in 2010 and we intend to keep that pace of growth,” he said.

Teradata specialize­s in providing solutions to handle so-called unstructur­ed or “big data.” These refer to unconventi­onal pieces of informatio­n that were not previously tracked by companies, but still provide valuable insights on consumer behavior, if read correctly.
