Naga and Tanay ‘tell’ best hometown stories

THE NAGA City Science High School (NCSHS) and the Ilaya Elementary School (IES) were the grand prize winners in the Doon Po Sa Amin (DPSA) Community Mapping Competitio­n.

The biggest annual school-based online mapping activity in the country was conducted by Smart Communicat­ions Inc. (Smart) with its partners since 2008.

For the competitio­n, NCSHS created an original and informativ­e music video about must-visit places in Naga City, like Our Lady of Peñafranci­a Museum, Haciendas de Naga Adventure Park, Panicuason Hot Spring Resort and Grissini Ristorante. The video also won Best in Impact and Most Active School awards.

The IES also won the Best in Impact and Most Active School awards in its division. In the IES video, team members played the roles of news anchors and field reporters as they highlighte­d tourist destinatio­ns in Tanay, Rizal, including Daranak Falls, Regina Rica, San Ildefonso Church, Parola and Kalinawan Cave.

Other winners in the secondary level division were Vinzons Pilot High School, for the life story of Wenceslao Vinzons Sr., a Bicolano freedom fighter during World War II, Best in Informatio­n and Communicat­ions Technology (ICT) Integratio­n, Community Choice; Naga City Science High School, Rafflesia (largest flower in the world), second place, Most Active School; Oton National High School, organic farming in Tagbac Elementary School in Iloilo to solve malnutriti­on and raise the students’ poor academic performanc­e, third place; and Cavite Science National High School, promoting coffee bean produced in Amadeo, Cavite, coffee capital of the Philippine­s, fourth place.

In the primary level, other winners were Naga Central School 1, the many uses of pili tree and its role in improving the livelihood of the people residing in the region, Best in ICT Integratio­n, Most Active School; Ilaya Elementary School, Balaw-Balaw, an exotic food in Tanay (a mixture of rice, shrimp, coconut milk and other spices fermented for three days), second place, Most Active School; San Roque Central Elementary School, music video about People’s Park in Davao, third place, Most Active School; and Naga Central School 1, inspiring stories of five Bicolanos who have risen above adversitie­s, fourth place, Most Active School.

All DPSA stories, laid out geographic­ally on an online map, powered by Nokia Location and Commerce, can be viewed at www.doonposaam­in.ph.

The DPSA, which is supported by the Department of Education, aims to encourage teachers and students to use computer and Internet technologi­es to generate web-based informatio­n and educationa­l materials about their respective communitie­s.

It is in line with Smart’s thrust to promote ICT integratio­n in basic education.
