Alabang school’s undernourished pupils get help

-

THE PHILIPPINE Red Cross (PRC) recognized recently Convergys Alabang 1 for supporting its programs through blood and cash donations, and volunteer work.

Convergys Alabang 1 employees are also helping some 100 undernourished children through a company-sponsored feeding program.

In 2012, Convergys Alabang 1 employees, with PRC, launched Food for Kids, a supplemental feeding program. Beneficiary Alabang Elementary School has the largest student population, with 7,000 enrollees. Students who registered weights lower than the normal body mass index were identified.

For six months, Convergys Alabang 1 employees went to the school daily to help prepare nutritious meals consisting of malunggay bread, turon with malunggay, a healthy version of champorado, arroz caldo, pancit and pasta dishes.

About 97 percent of the beneficiaries gradually attained the normal weight for their age. Their academic performance also showed marked improvement.

Principal Emilia Alvarez expressed her gratitude to the employees of Convergys Alabang 1, one of three Convergys sites in Muntinlupa City. It has been a Red Cross partner since last year and a leader in the blood donation campaign, donating 121 blood bags in three scheduled drives.

Aside from pledging to support PRC Muntinlupa’s blood drives, Convergys Alabang 1 will also look into sponsoring another Food for Kids project this year.

Marlon de Mesa, Convergys Alabang 1 site director, said corporate citizenship was a company core value. Aside from taking care of its employees, the company also helps the communities where it operates.

Convergys, which has multiple contact centers across the Philippines and around 32,000 employees, is the country’s largest private employer. It won the 2013 BPO Company of the Year award at the International ICT Awards.
