NCAA: Letran player wounded, wife killed in shooting

- By Cedelf P. Tupas

LETRAN guard Franz Dysam and his wife were shot barely an hour after the Knights dumped the Lyceum Pirates, 61-53, yesterday for their fifth straight win in the NCAA basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Dysam, 24, and his wife were on their way home when two motorcyling men riding tandem fired shots at his car at the corner of N. Domingo Street and Araneta Avenue at the boundary of San Juan and Quezon City.

His wife Joan was declared dead on arrival at the San Juan Medical Center.

Police reports said that the attackers fired four to five shots which hit both Dysam and his wife.

The Letran point guard, who was hit in the neck, remained conscious unlike his wife, who was reportedly hit with multiple gunshots.

Center Raymond Almazan came up with another strong effort of 19 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks as the unbeaten Knights matched their best start since 2008.

In the second match, Ola Adeogun delivered another big game as San Beda led from start to finish in coasting past Jose Rizal U, 65-41, to stretch its winning run to four games.

Adeogun was virtually unstoppable, finishing with 23 points that went with 16 boards for the Lions who climbed to solo second at 51. The Bombers dropped 3-3.

Almazan starred in a third-quarter uprising that gave the Knights control of what had been a nip and tuck contest.

“I just wanted to do my best for the team,” said Almazan, who missed practice Thursday because of illness, in Filipino. “I thought about my idol Michael Jordan, who also played even when he was sick.” The scores First Game LETRAN 61— Almazan 19, Nambatac 14, Cruz 7, Racal 7, Gabawan 6, Po 3, Buenaflor 3, Ruaya 2, Dysam 0, Luib 0, Belorio 0, Publico 0.
