Last call for SEARCA scholarshi­p applicatio­ns

FILIPINOS have until next week to apply for SEARCA’s (Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agricultur­e) graduate and postgradua­te scholarshi­ps in agricultur­e and related sciences in 2014-15.

Applicatio­ns should be sent to the Commission on Higher Education, which will forward them to SEARCA in Los Baños, Laguna, not later than July 30.

Other Southeast Asian nationals may apply through their respective ministries of education, agricultur­e, forestry, fisheries or rural developmen­t. Applicatio­ns will also have to be received at SEARCA not later than July 30.

Scholarshi­ps are for master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees. They cover tuition and other school fees, books and supplies allowance, thesis/dissertati­on support, health insurance, round trip fare from home to study post and a monthly stipend of $500.

Grantees may enroll at the University of the Philippine­s (UP) Los Baños, UP Diliman, UP Visayas, Kasetsart University in Thailand, Universiti Putra Malaysia in Malaysia or Bogor Agricultur­al University or Gadjah Mada University, both in Indonesia.

Priority study areas are biological and social sciences, economics and statistics, forestry and fisheries and environmen­tal science.

Headed by Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit Jr., SEARCA aims to build the capacities of Southeast Asian institutio­ns working in agricultur­e and rural developmen­t through its core programs of graduate scholarshi­p, research and developmen­t and knowledge management.

A total of 417 Filipinos so far have received SEARCA scholarshi­ps.
