TIP Academic Programs attain ABET International Accreditation
THE TECHNOLOGICAL Institute of the Philippines (TIP) recently garnered simultaneous international accreditation of 18 of its Engineering and Computing programs from the US-based ABET, formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
ABET is the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. ABET accreditation demonstrates a program’s commitment to providing its students with quality education.
TIP Manila received accredited status from the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET for its undergraduate programs in Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and from the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET for its undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology.
TIP Quezon City, on the other hand, was granted accredited status by ABET-EAC for its undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Sanitary Engineering; and ABETCAC for its undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology.
The Information Systems (IS) programs of TIP are the first and only IS programs accredited by ABET CAC in Southeast Asia.
TIP president Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz said, “ABET programmatic accreditation is one of the best legacies TIP can give its students. We at TIP have further added tremendous value to our students and graduates, most specially in terms of international employment mobility, with the student outcomes they now possess. The challenge now is how to help students achieve the desired student outcomes at a deeper level, for even greater value creation and addition.”
Accreditation is a voluntary, peerreview process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations. The evaluations, conducted by teams of volunteer professionals working in industry, government, academe, and private practice within the ABET disciplines, focus on program curricula, faculty, facilities, institutional support, and other important areas.
ABET is a not-for-profit organization, owned and operated by its more than 32 professional and technical member societies. An internationally respected organization with some 2,000 volunteers, ABET has set the higher-educational standards in its fields for nearly 80 years. More information about ABET, its member societies, and the evaluation criteria used to accredit programs can be found at www.abet.org.
