Breast cancer doctors may now apply online
THE AVON Foundation for Women is inviting applicants for the Avon Global Breast Cancer Clinical Scholars Program.
Applications, which should include a letter of intent, must be submitted not later than Dec. 9.
Under the program, breast cancer specialists outside the United States will train beginning in May at 12 Avon Foundation-funded breast cancer centers in the United States.
The Avon scholars program aims to provide advanced training so doctors can bring new skills and information that will improve treatment and care of breast cancer patients in their home countries.
A total of 24 physicians will undergo four- to eight-week intensive training/ preceptorship.
Each host institution will have two scholars. The hosts are:
Boston Medical Center (Boston, Massachusetts), Emory University-Grady Memorial Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia), Georgetown University-Capital Breast Care Center (Washington, DC), Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland), Magee-Women’s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, Massachusetts), New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center (New York, New York), Northwestern University (Chicago, Illinois), Sinai Urban Health Institute (Chicago, Illinois), University of California Los Angeles-Olive View Medical Center (Los Angeles, California), University of California San Francisco-San Francisco General Hospital (San Francisco, California) andWashington University St. Louis (St. Louis, Missouri).
The inaugural Avon Global Scholars program in 2012 had 85 applicants from 22 countries, of which 25 from 14 countries were selected.
The Philippines’ Dr. Alex Tan of Davao Regional Hospital in Davao City trained at the University of California Los Angeles-Olive View Medical Center while Dr. Gemma Leonora Uy of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital went to Georgetown University-Capital Breast Care Center.
Marc Hurlbert, executive director of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, said the first scholars were now using their advanced skills to improve the treatment and care of women with breast cancer in their countries.
Applicants outside the United States may apply online.
The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, launched in 1992 and led by the US-based Avon Foundation for Women, has programs in 58 countries and has donated more than $780 million for research and advancing access to care.
Avon is the leading corporate supporter of the cause globally.
It awards funding to cancer centers and community-based grassroots breast health programs, and supports breast cancer research and access to care. More than 17 million women globally had received free mammograms and breast cancer screenings while more than 100 millionmore were educated about breast cancer. Avon has also funded research into the causes of breast cancer and ways to prevent it.
The Avon Foundation also raises funds through the sale of Avon “Pink Ribbon” products and events like the US Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series.
