P200,000 for top winner in sandwich-making contest

BIG CASH prizes await the top winners in Gardenia’s The Next Big Sandwich Hit competitio­n, held as part of the observance of World Bread Day on Oct. 16.

The finals will be held during the Happy Bread Day festivitie­s of Gardenia Bakeries Philippine­s Inc. on Oct. 28 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.

First prize is P200,000, second is P70,000 and third is P35,000, in cash and in kind.

Participan­ts will come from 10 universiti­es offering hotel and restaurant management, and culinary arts courses.

Chosen from 10-minute video auditions, participan­ts will prepare sandwiches in the fun categories Hell Week, Free Cut, Fuel Up and Good Morning. They will demonstrat­e their sandwich-making skills using any two loaf variants from Gardenia— Classic White Bread, High Fiber Wheat Bread, High Fiber Wheat Raisin Loaf, Wheat Cranberry Loaf and Slim ’n Fit Wheaten Bread.

Five teams from each participat­ing school will compete for the chance to represent their school in the finals.

Winners will be chosen through online votes, taste test, use of a sponsored ingredient, how much money they make in the food kiosk challenge at Mercato Centrale and three main sandwiches.

World Bread Day is an initiative of the Internatio­nal Union of Bakers and BakersConf­ectioners. Started in 2005, it celebrates the simple mixture of flour and water to make bread.
