- Anton Barretto and Marissa Lopa

IF YOU’RE looking for a bed that’s out of the ordinary but within your budget, you might want to consider this pallet bed.

As shown in the photo, the base of the bed is made of wood pallets connected together and painted white. Quite imaginative, it will impress your guests and is a great conversation piece. What you’ll need: Wood pallets, usually made of light pinewood. Used ones may be purchased from junkyards, or check out classified ads. Hammer and nails Plywood (optional) Solignum or termite/insect-preventive solution for wood (optional) Sandpaper Wiping rags Paint and paintbrush Cushion, made to measure If you have a size of bed in mind, have those measurements with you when you buy your pallets so you know exactly how many you will need.

Connect and secure the pallets with nails. You may hammer a plywood cut to size on top for a solid and even backing for the cushion. You now have your bed base.

Sand the pallets till smooth. Wipe the wood dust off.

If you decide to apply solignum or termite/insect-preventive solution, apply now or follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Start painting on your first coat following manufacturer’s instructions or hire/ask a professional. Repeat. Place your cushion or mattress on top. Tip: A thick cushion or mattress gives a more luxurious look.

You may want to stick rubber pads under the corners of your pallet bed to prevent the bed from scratching the floor and sliding out of place.
