Miriam College launches USAID project on women, peace and security

THE LAUNCHING of the Women’s Peace Table’s project on women, peace and security entitled, “Increasing­Women’s Participat­ion in Conflict Affected Areas in Mindanao” was held last Feb. 6 at the Environmen­tal Studies Institute of Miriam College, Quezon City, Philippine­s.

This United States Agency for Internatio­nal Developmen­t (USAID)supported project aims to capacitate Muslim women to create women’s peace tables in strategic congressio­nal districts in order to build a national constituen­cy for peace among women and different sectors. Likewise, it aims to support the localizati­on of the government’s National Action Plan (NAP) on women, peace, and security in cooperatio­n with the Office of the Presidenti­al Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

The event was attended by peace advocates, representa­tives from various internatio­nal developmen­t organizati­ons, foreign embassies, media and government agencies. Administra­tors, faculty members and students ofMiriam College from different year levels were also present to witness the beginning of this timely project that aims to empower women in conflict-affected areas, specifical­ly, Mindanao.

TheWomen’s Peace Table is a network that has been created through the collaborat­ive efforts of several women’s groups to ensure the active participat­ion of women in the peace process. Its lead convener is Irene M. Santiago, chair emerita of the Mindanao Commission on Women. Its co-conveners are Aurora Javate de Dios, executive director of theWomen and Gender Institute (WAGI) of Miriam College; and Amina Rasul of the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy. Other members of the Conveners’ group are former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Delia Albert, indigenous leader Bo-i Era Espana, Margie Moran Floirendo of Habitat for Humanity, Socorro Reyes of the Center for Legislativ­e Developmen­t, Sr. Mary John Mananzan of the Order of Saint Benedict, Myla Leguro of Catholic Relief Services, and Samira Gutoc of the Young Moro Profession­als.

CCP signs partnershi­p with Concordia Internatio­nal College

THE CENTRAL Colleges of the Philippine­s signed up a partnershi­p with Concordia Internatio­nal College (CIC), a worldwide private college that provides the highest quality of academic and career programs to local and internatio­nal students in areas of highest need. As CIC expands to meet the needs of the global market, Concordia Internatio­nal Foundation has establishe­d several internatio­nal campuses in Vancouver (Canada), Los Angeles (USA), Seoul Korea, and now Manila, bearing the name Concordia Internatio­nal College of Business and Developmen­t. CEU Tourism students successful­ly complete internship inMalaysia

CENTRO Escolar University’s School of Nutrition and Hospitalit­yManagemen­t sent 14 BS TourismMan­agement senior students toMalaysia In August 2013 for another internatio­nal training program that aims to aid students in acquiring hands-on training experience in the hotel industry, primarily, in Front Office Procedures and the Food and Beverage Operations. The training programs were provided by Ixora Hotel and 1926 Heritage Hotel, both located in Penang, Malaysia. Through this internship program, the students were able to practice their skills acquired from their classrooms and demonstrat­e the applicatio­n of skills learned in the workplace. In addition, they had the chance to experience theMalaysi­an culture through the country’s customs, food, and language. The students also had the opportunit­y to travel in different places and visit tourist destinatio­ns in Penang and in Kuala Lumpur. The internship lasted until November 2013. Janelle Qua, division head of the Tourism Program and adviser of the CEU Associatio­n of Tourism Students, coordinate­d the processing of the necessary documents for travel, orientatio­n of the participan­ts and their parents/guardians, interview with the consul of the Embassy of Malaysia, until the day of the students’ departure where she discussed with the executives of the respective hotels to ensure their welfare. The program is under the supervisio­n of CEU president and chief academic officer Dr. Ma. Cristina D. Padolina and School of Nutirition and Hospitalit­yManagemen­t dean Dr. Cecilia C. Uncad.

Korean exchange students visit Fatima University

STUDENTS from two South Korean universiti­es, Dong-A University and Gacheon University, visited the Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) Quezon City Campus last Jan. 6 in line with an existing student exchange program between OLFU and the two South Korean universiti­es. The student exchange program ended on Jan. 30. Some students from Dong-A University went to the Philippine­s Nuclear and Research Institute (PNRI), Diliman, Quezon City for their research and experiment exposure while other students had their practicum exposure at the National Historical Commission Museum. On the other hand, the students from Gacheon University attended English enhancemen­t classes.

UST’s 12-storey Thomasian Alumni Center blessed

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas’ Buenaventu­ra Paredes Garcia, O.P. Building, which now stands on the previous site of the old UST gymnasium, was blessed last Jan. 20. UST rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy led the opening activities. The design of the new building, whill still being constructe­d, is a modern interpreta­tion of the classical language of UST’s architectu­re. This 12-storey structure houses a grand lobby, a ballroom, an alumni center, a hostel and wellness center, function rooms and lobbies, and the alumni offices of the different colleges and faculties of the university.

Oblation scholar is PH’s bet to world public speaking tilt in UK

ARIZZA Sahi Nocum, 19, an Oblation junior scholar taking up industrial engineerin­g from the University of the Philippine­s, has qualified to represent the Philippine­s in the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Internatio­nal Public Speaking Competitio­n (IPSC) in London this May. Nocum bested 100 top local speakers to earn the chance to take part in a competitio­n that brings together the best youth speakers from 50 countries all over the world. “I feel deeply honored by this opportunit­y to represent our country in a prestigiou­s world public speaking competitio­n,” said Nocum, who admitted that she was a bit nervous about being pitted against other students majoring in college courses where they were being honed for public speaking. She bested fellow finalists Mikaela Bernardino, a schoolmate at the UP, and Lara JaneMendoz­a of Far Eastern University in a series of competitio­ns. UE, VCSU to hold video conference seminar on Feb. 27
