Climate-adaptive design winners named
ARCHITECTURE students from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and University of Santo Tomas (UST) topped the design competition Build Forward.
Mervin Afan, Corenne Martin and Rafael Khemlani of UP Diliman won first prize in the school design category for “Taklob,” which may be used for new schools in “Yolanda”-affected areas. They received a cash prize of P150,000.
UST’s Lara Therese Cruz won first place for her house design, “Bambox Hut,” which may be used in the construction of houses in the same areas. She also received a cash prize of P150,000.
Launched by property developer Ortigas & Co., Build Forward was a nationwide architectural competition in designing climate-adaptive home and school buildings.
The competition, which was supported by the Department of Science and Technology and Habitat for Humanity Philippines, received more than 100 entries, from which 10 were short-listed.
In the school design category, the other winners were UP Diliman’s Jose Ruel Fabia, Maria Angela Luna and Kurt Cleon Yu (second); Marvin Patrick Arellano, Colleen Ann Ong and Tricia Nadine Pulido also of UP Diliman (third); Emmanuel Ornos, Everette Rabbon and Christopher de Vera of the University of Northern Philippines (fourth); and Gino M. Diongzon and Michael Vincent Lagason of the University of the Assumption (fifth).
In the house category, the other winners were Odessa Kaye Bulahan of the University of San Carlos (second); Christian Jay Noble of Technological Institute of the Philippines (third); Menard Navarro, Joyce Mari Linchangco, Paul Allan Bansil and Jon Ilio of Mapúa Institute of Technology (fourth); UP Diliman’s Jonie Agas and Regine Deximo (fifth).
