Two generations of Filipino fashion designers meet in Face-Off

-

FACE-OFF, the annual fashion show of INQUIRER Lifestyle, will mark many firsts as it is presented on Nov. 30 at Solaire Grand Ballroom.

For the first time, Face-Off will be a comparative presentation of at least two generations of Filipino designers. It is aptly titled “Face-Off 2014: The Masters and The Millennials.”

INQUIRER Lifestyle’s Face-Off 2014 is sponsored by Hana Shampoo and Champion Infinity of the Peerless Group, in cooperation with O+ USA, Solaire Resort and Casino, and LOOK Magazine.

It will have more than 30 Filipino designers whose careers span significant eras of Philippine fashion design, from the late ’70s—considered the Golden Age of Philippine fashion—to the present.

For the first time, Face-Off has chosen a theme: the contemporary maria clara. The designers will redefine this Filipino wear that dates back to the early centuries and adapt it to today’s Filipino woman, her needs and lifestyle.

“It should be interesting to see how the designers, from the masters to the upcoming ones, see the maria clara, their different takes,” said INQUIRER Lifestyle editor Thelma Sioson San Juan. “Do the Masters, who honed their talent and craft in the late ’70s, see the maria clara from the traditional perspective? Will the Millennials be iconoclastic?

“The terno is usually a favorite design theme of competitions. Yet on occasions that call for Filipiniana attire, it’s the maria clara, the baro’t saya that is the goto attire of women, because it’s an easier, more accessible choice. The blouse and skirt are much more practical.”

Also, for the first time, Face-Off will be directed by two of the country’s foremost fashion show directors, Jackie Aquino and Robby Carmona. Again, it should be interesting to compare their production concepts for the Masters and the Millennials.

The Masters are Auggie Cordero, Mike dela Rosa, Rajo Laurel, Rhett Eala, Lulu Tan-Gan, Efren Ocampo, Philip Rodriguez, JC Buendia, Randy Ortiz, Ito Curata, Albert Andrada, Dennis Lustico, Loretto, Vic Barba, Oj Hofer, Cary Santiago, Jojie Lloren and Cesar Gaupo.

The Millennials are Maureen Disini, Vania Romoff, Joey Samson, Ivarluski Aseron, Jun Escario, Francis Libiran, Eric de los Santos, Jerome Salaya Ang, Pablo Cabahug, Edwin Ao, James Reyes, Yvonne Quisumbing and Sassa Jimenez.
