Auto Review Road Safety Olympics set this Saturday

THE POPULAR sports basketball and volleyball will be mixed with road safety activities in the Auto Review Road Safety Olympics on March 21 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Held in cooperatio­n with the Philippine Sports Commission, participan­ts will mix it up in a whole day of activities featuring road safety stakeholde­rs from the government and private sector, including the motoring industry’s Mazda Philippine­s, Chevrolet Philippine­s, Hyundai, Bridgeston­e Tires, and with support from Isuzu Philippine­s, Mitsubishi Motors and Toyota Motor Philippine­s.

Aside from the ball games, cheerleadi­ng exhibition­s and road safety slogan chants will be performed by UAAP/NCAA schools and other groups in line with the theme “Road Safety: Everybody’s Responsibi­lity,” which is also in support of the United Nations-initiated Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.

The advocacy event, held in cooperatio­n with the Metropolit­an Manila Developmen­t Authority, Philippine Global Road Safety Partnershi­p, Automotive Associatio­n Philippine­s, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Red Cross, Roadhouse Manila Bay, AGC Flat Glass Philippine­s, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and Electric Vehicle Associatio­n of the Philippine­s, was launched on Jan. 24 at the SM by the Bay, Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Over 300 participan­ts, most of them traffic enforcers from all over Metro Manila, played beach volleyball, engaged in a tug-of-war and amazing race-type road safety trivia challenge, took part in a festive parade that culminated in a pledge by the participan­ts to instill good road habits and courtesy for motorists, pedestrian­s and other road users.
