Oscar winner highlight of this year’s Cine Europa
PAWEL Pawlikowski’s “Ida” (Poland), best foreign language film winner at the 2015 Oscar and Bafta awards, leads the lineup of groundbreaking and heart-warming films in Cine Europa 18, to be held at Shang Cineplex, Shangri-La Plaza, starting today until Sept. 20.
“Ida” tells the story of a young nun who discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation. “Ida” won 69 other awards, including best international film at the Independent Spirit Awards.
“Pride” (United Kingdom), best film winner at the British Independent Film Awards, will also be shown.
“Pride” recounts the unlikely yet triumphant partnership of the National Union of Mineworkers and gay and lesbian activists.
“Pride” was also nominated for a Golden Globe award, best film comedy or musical and won the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.

A total of 23 films from 19 countries will be shown, including “Rise Up! And Dance” (Austria),” “Faith, Love and Whiskey” (Bulgaria), “The Legend of Paul and Paula” (Germany), “Suck Me Shakes peer” (Germany), “Totally True Love” (Norway),” “Little Baby Jesus” (Czech Republic), “Puppy Love” (Belgium), “Gilles” (Belgium), “Ovosodo” (Italy), and “15 Years and One Day” (Spain).
Also on the list are “Ginger and Cinnamon” (Italy), “The Corpse Must Die” (Slovakia), “La Belle Vie” (France), “Antboy” (Denmark), “Finn” (The Netherlands), “Silent Wedding” (Romania), “Keep Rollin’” (Switzerland), “Naked Harbor” (Finland), “Stockholm Stories” (Sweden), “Miasto 44” (Poland) and “Live” (Romania).
These contemporary films tackle diverse topics from ballet and breakdancing (“Rise Up! and Dance”) to music and football (“Finn”), and the struggles of a paraplegic (“Keep Rollin’”) and a beleaguered TV anchor (“Live”).
After Shangri-La, Cine Europa will have screenings in Baguio (Sept. 22- 27), Iloilo (Sept. 29-Oct. 4), Zamboanga (Oct. 14-18), Tacloban (Oct. 21-25), Davao (Nov. 3-8), Cebu (Oct. 9-11), Leyte (Nov. 10-15), Cagayan de Oro (Nov. 18-22) and Manila/MMDA (Nov. 24-29).
Screenings at Shangri-La Cineplex are free, on a first come-first served basis.
