TODAY, Sept. 21, is the 115th death anniversar­y of Dr. Joaquin Gonzalez, the rector of the first Philippine state university. When Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo establishe­d the Universida­d Cientifico-Literaria de Filipinas by virtue of a presidenti­al decree issued in 1898, Gonzalez was named its rector. The institutio­n was located in Navotas and Tambobong before it was transferre­d to Malolos. The Universida­d Cientifico-Literaria de Filipinas was succeeded by the University of the Philippine­s in 1908. Gonzalez died in 1900. On Sept. 21, 1982, the National Historical Institute installed a historical marker in his hometown in Bulacan to honor him.
