SEVERAL schools received this year’s Scholastic Readers Cup, which is given to educational institutions for exemplary efforts to improve literacy.

Among the winners were OSJ-Santo Rosario Academy, OSJ-Holy Family Academy, St. Thomas Academy, Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc., St. Paul College Balayan (Batangas), Iloilo Scholastic Academy, OSJ-Saint Joseph Institute, Saint Mary’s Angels College of Valenzuela, OSJ-Saint James Academy, OSJ-Joseph Marello Institute, Santa Teresa College, Notre Dame of Greater Manila, MGC New Life Academy and Falcon School.

The presentation of the Readers Cup capped the second year of the interschool competition to raise literacy. Students of the top schools had read the most number of books.

Winners were chosen from educational institutions that participated in Scholastic’s Assessment and Enrichment Program (AEP) and Independent Reading Program (IRP).

AEP and IRP are literacy programs to help produce significant improvements in students’ reading abilities. The competition ran from February 2014 to April this year.

Fritzie Salem-Cruz, general manager of Scholastic in the Philippines, said they hoped the winning individuals and institutions would inspire other educators to raise more and better readers and good learners, too.

Scholastic is the world’s largest publisher and distributor of over 600 original titles annually.

Founded in 1920 as a single classroom magazine, Scholastic has become a global organization serving tens of thousands of schools and tens of millions of homes in 165 countries in 45 languages through its publishing and education arms.
