Home-based teachers hold conference in Davao

-

THE THIRD leg of the 51Talk home-based teachers conference, Walk the 51Talk, was held recently in Davao City.

51Talk is the largest online English-teaching platform in the Philippines with more than 4,000 home-based online English teachers across the country.

Participants, who came from Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Surigao, Negros, General Santos City and Zamboanga, learned best practices to succeed in home-based online English teaching.

Jennifer Que, vice president for Philippine operations, discussed good habits that would help teachers take control of their careers as home-based online educators.

She said that being home-based was more difficult. It requires self-discipline. Teachers should invest in technology, a home office and themselves. Their success, she said, is in their own hands. Training director Hyw Davies talked about how teachers of 51Talk were changing the game of online English education in China and how teachers could continue making an impact on their students.

Teachers Novie and Tiger, 51Talk’s top teachers in Mindanao, shared with their coteachers tips on how to succeed as home-based online English tutors.

Jason O’Connor, who is based in the Philippines and has been a 51Talk teacher for more than a year, said getting the teachers together in a conference helped them understand they were one piece of a huge puzzle and how much they were making life-changing experiences for people who did not speak English.

Teacher Yesannie, who had been borrowing a friend’s laptop to teach, walked away with the biggest prize of the day, a brand-new laptop.
