Museo De La Salle asserts heritage’s role in environment preservation
DE LA Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) through its Museo De La Salle and Environment Resource Management Center and in partnership with National Committee for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will host the 1st International Conference on Luzon Heritage and Environment (ICLHE2016) on July 14-15, 2016 at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.
The ICLHE2016 aims to be a catalyst in fostering researches and discussions on how heritage and environment are intertwined and from there create a critical mass of advocates for the conservation and protection of both. Museo De La Salle director Cecille Torrevillas-Gelicame emphasizes that Luzon Island presents not just a multi-diverse cultural and historical heritage but also houses endemic and biologically unique environment.
Gelicame shares that the ICLCHE2016 is part of the new directions set for the Museo De La Salle which asserts the critical role of museums in the growing concern with regard to the preservation of Philippine cultural landscapes which includes the environment due to massive urban and industrial development. According to Gelicame, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) urges museums to take responsibility not only of their collection but also the cultural heritage around them by being custodians of knowledge, historical and cultural values and by partnering with experts on landscape protection, conservation and development.
Gelicame strives towards the realization of DLSU-D’s aims to become one of the heritage theme parks in the country. Moreover, as a foremost university museum in South Luzon, some new museum programs have been designed to promote the enabling capabilities of heritage and culture in national development.
Museo De La Salle is located in the campus of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas. For inquiry on Museo De La Salle and ICHLE2016, please call 046-4811940 or e-mail museodelasalle@dlsud.edu.ph or visit www.dlsud.edu.ph.
