SCULPTOR SALCEDO IS ‘BRANCHING OUT’ IN NEW SHOW
Jinggoy Salcedo combines stainless steel with borosilicate glass—a technique he learned from working at his family’s glass business, Angeli Glass—in rendering tree sculptures in “Branching Out,” opening Dec. 4, 4 p.m., at Galerie Francesca in SM Megamall
“I look at branches and how they seem to reach out to different ideas and experience,” said Salcedo. “But I also look at the roots and how they are the foundations of these trees, which is really just a metaphor for life. So it’s about family, friends, and how they help you branch out, so to speak.”
Salcedo combines standalone sculptures he is known for with a new series of sculptural wall relief of branches, rendered in stainless steel and beautiful colored glass.
“With Each Other” is perhaps the best representation of this, with a wheel of branches fading into a range of colors from pink, to reds, to greens, and ultimately white.
“New Beginnings” shows branches laid out with black glass leaves that blend into the stainless steel branches they are connected to. “I did this in black and white, because I wanted to show that we are still connected to each other, despite our differences,” said Salcedo. “Families and friends don’t always get along. But regardless of their differences, they are still one.”
Salcedo went to the Philippine School of Interior Design and Philippine Women’s University, where he honed his sense of volume and space.
