Soroptimist Marikina marks ten

-

Soroptimist International Marikina Metro (SIMM) celebrates its tenth charter anniversary this year. With its new set of officers headed by professional social worker Nadeia Sarte, the chapter conducted recently an organizational strengthening seminar to synchronize chapter activities in the next two years. The well-attended workshop was held at the sprawling Loyola Grand Villas residence of founding charter member Azucena "Jing" Simeon. SI Marikina Metro has been conducting numerous training programs towards the empowerment of women and girls in the valley-city. Its micro and small scale livelihood courses and mentoring activities have been a boon to the marginalized sector. These efforts came to a head when Typhoon Ondoy wiped out rice stocks of enterprising NFA dealers; the chapter gave out uncollateralized loans to the women entrepreneurs. On another occasion, it also adopted Barangay Malanday when monsoon rains inundated the entire village displacing hundreds of families. It provided financial assistance to the womenfolk with SI of the Americas and SI of Great Britain pitching in through the international organization's Disaster Grant. Soroptimist International Marikina Metro (SIMM) has been led by very competent and adept leaders. Milagros Arnaldo served as charter president from July-December 2006. Dr. Charing Santos presided over chapter affairs from January to June 2007. Milette Lorenzo was at the helm from 2007 to 2008. Esmela David served a full twoyear term from 2008 to 2010. Florence K. Martin was president from 2010 to 2012. Lorenza Calpotura was president from 2012 to 2014. Janette Lapus headed the chapter from 2014-2016, while Nadeia Sarte's term is from 2016 to 2018. SIMM's sails have been unfurled and favorable winds blow. The destination looms in the horizon and all hands are on deck. With 21 active members, the women and girls of Marikina will certainly be reached!
