TIP enhances students’ learning with new educational model

-

The Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), one of the country’s leading engineering and technology schools, continues to enhance its program offerings to address the demands of a rapidly evolving globalized world. Aside from achieving international accreditation from the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) for its 20 engineering and computing programs, TIP is currently evolving its educational model to ensure that its graduates remain highly competent and competitive. The new education model builds on TIP’s established outcomes-based education that is geared towards producing engineers and technology workers who possess industry-desired qualities, this time, by adding new focus on the development of students with technopreneurial qualities. The new model will develop students’ technopreneurial skills such as identifying problems with business opportunity implications, ideation or creating opportunity-maximizing solutions, market validation, and execution, through a highly experiential process. The new model hopes to instill in students a desire to solve real-life problems with solutions that could impact society and contribute to national development. Taking this a step further, TIP has also embarked on collaborative applied research to provide its faculty and students with concrete and better opportunities to work with partner industries, so that they may apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in solving real industry problems. By institutionally supporting collaborative applied research, TIP provides faculty members the opportunity to acquire technopreneurial qualities themselves, so that they may become more effective at guiding TIP students through the technopreneurship process as well. “As industries become increasingly competitive, we need to expose our students and faculty early in worthwhile endeavors that could later on, make a positive impact on industry and society. This is the essence of our new educational model that focuses on student technopreneurship and institutional collaborative applied research,” said Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz, TIP president. TIP aims to focus its collaborative applied research thrust on niche areas, such as waste management and product design and development, as well as productivity and optimization, and decision support systems.
