PH DOCUS IN MUNICH

Two Filipino documentar­ies are in the lineup of the 32nd Internatio­nal Documentar­y Film Festival Munich, which ends today in Bavaria, Germany. Baby Ruth Villarama’s “Sunday Beauty Queen” and Ramona Diaz’s “Motherland (Bayan Ina Mo)” are among the 157 films from 45 countries that have been selected as part of the two-week event.

According to its website, the fest “highlights socially relevant and artistical­ly valuable” docus.

The site relates that Villarama’s docu, best picture winner at last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, presents “a beauty competitio­n [of Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong] … in a whole new light.”

Meanwhile, Diaz’s film allows viewers to “gain intimate insights into Filipino society… amid the orderly chaos of mothers, babies, nurses and relatives” at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, which has the distinctio­n of having “one of the highest [hospital] birth rates in the world.”
