TRUMP TO IRAN ON TERROR ATTACKS: YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW

-

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed sympathy for victims of a terror attack in Iran that killed 13 people, but issued a barbed warning that Iran country was reaping what it sowed.

Gunmen and suicide bombers, acting almost simultaneously, attacked Iran’s parliament and a shrine to the revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini in the first attacks in the country claimed by the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

“We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times,” Trump said in a brief statement.

“We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote.”

Trump has long accused Iran of backing terrorism.

During last year’s presidential campaign, he suggested that one of his top priorities was to dismantle the “disastrous” 2015 deal aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

IS said in a statement on Wednesday that five of its fighters were responsible for a raid on Iran’s parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini, using assault rifles, grenades and suicide vests, and killing and injuring almost 60 people before dying.

The Sunni militant group also threatened Iran’s majority Shiite population with more attacks, saying “the caliphate will not miss a chance to spill their blood.”

Iran’s supreme leader shrugged off the attacks calling them “firecrackers.”

The attacks, according to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, “will not have the slightest effect” on Iran.—
