Christ's Body

- BY BISHOP PRECIOSO D. CANTILLAS, SDB, DD

A very unique and essential belief of the Catholic faith is the Body and Blood of Jesus, really present in the Eucharist. Jesus gives His body to be eaten by those who wish to live forever. Through His power, Jesus established the Sacrament of the Eucharist and gave also the power and the mandate to His apostles to "do it in memory of me"; thus, the Church through her ordained ministers, the priests, continue to celebrate the Holy Mass, where the Body of Christ could be taken by the believer which would nourish him with the strength and inspiration to live Christian life wherever he is.

The believer who partakes of the Body of Christ is united with the Lord, thus, Jesus is in the being of the believer. So that, I think, even the physical aspect of the believer's being and what is done by it, such as his daily work, would bear the marks of the Body of Christ. I believe that the presence of Jesus, while truly is in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, could be felt also in the bodily and/or physical activities of the believer. Humanwork of believers everywhere in the world and at every time, would be concrete signs of the Body of Christ. This dimension of human work, as being an extension of Christ's presence in space and time, is not very obvious; it needs a deeper reflection, and a surrender of reason through faith, to accept this reality of the Body of Christ. When reading Jesus's words that "my flesh for the life of the world", I think of the many worker-believers doing their jobs for people to live and enjoy life.
