PDI youth feature wins La Salle award
“Where Vivaldi soars above the noise of dump trucks,” a story written by Metro reporter Jhesset Enano, won as Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in the 14th Lasallian Scholarum, an award given by De La Salle University to recognize outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast and campus journalists.
An Inquirer Metro story bagged one of the top honors in the 14th Lasallian Scholarum Awards given by De La Salle University (DLSU) to recognize outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast and campus journalists.
“Where Vivaldi soars above the noise of dump trucks” by Metro reporter Jhesset Enano won as Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a nationally circulated publication.
Published on Oct. 23, 2016, Enano’s piece won out of 11 nominated articles from national dailies. It told of the efforts of community workers to teach values while developing the musical skills of children in a slum area in Payatas, Quezon City, through Sparrow Music Philippines.
“The award was for a story that really meant a lot to me. I thank the Inquirer and Metro editor Volt Contreras for the opportunity to work on the article,” Enano said during the awarding ceremony held at DLSU’s Henry Inquirer Metro reporter Jhesset Enano with her “Flight” trophy designed by sculptor and La Salle alumnus Daniel dela Cruz. Sy Sr. Hall on Monday. “I hope this will encourage more journalists to write about underreported issues.”

Corpus of The Star; “Pinoy perfect: Scholar aces 4 years in Toronto University” by Jovic Yee of PDI; “Sweet victory” by Dylan Andre Afuang of Manila Bulletin; “Raising the bar” by Karl Angelica Ocampo of PDI; and “Kidpreneur goes beyond profit motive” by Bernadette Nicolas of PDI.
The grand prize for Outstanding Feature Story on De La Salle went to “DLSU grad student developing iSteth, a smart lung sound alert system” by Business Mirror’s Stephanie Tumampos.
DLSU president Br. Raymundo Suplido said this year’s Scholarum awards saluted storytellers who had taken up the challenge of depicting the realities of the country’s youth and state of education.
This year’s judges were Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara, Knowledge Channel Foundation’s Raissa Hechanova-Posadas, DLSU student government president Mikee de Vega, Yellow Boat of Hope cofounder Jay Jaboneta and Al Jazeera English Senior Correspondent Margarita Ortigas.
