TAIPEI— A 5.7-magnitude quake struck the eastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, just hours after a 6.4-magnitude quake hit the same area, killing 10 people, including a Filipino caregiver, and injuring scores of others.

The body of the Filipino casualty, identified by the Manila Economic and Cultural Office as Melody Albano Castro, had been found, according to Philippine television reports early Thursday evening.

At least 66 people were declared missing.

The government said the new quake took place near Hualien, the same area where the 6.4-magnitude quake struck on Tuesday and where recovery efforts were still ongoing.

The US Geological Survey said the new quake’s epicenter was 21 kilometers northeast of the city at a depth of 11 km.

Aftershocks hampered rescue efforts on Thursday as work- ers combed through collapsed buildings in search of survivors.

It was initially feared that as many as 150 people may be missing in the rubble.

Many of the missing were believed to be trapped in a 12- story residential building that was tilting at a 45-degree angle.

Tenants and their belongings were flung across their apartments in the damaged building.—
