Netflix has outdone itself with its hot new sci-fi show “Altered Carbon.” The 10-episode show, starring Joel Kinnaman, Martha Higareda, Dichen Lachman, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Chris Conner, Trieu Tran, Will Yun Lee and James Purefoy, is based on the critically acclaimed 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan.

In the future of “Altered Carbon,” nobody needs to die. Human consciousness is downloaded into chips called stacks, and can be switched to a new body—called a “sleeve,” when the physical body dies. But only the wealthy can afford to keep re-sleeving, and this has resulted in a dystopian society corrupted by wealth and power. Kinnaman plays Takeshi Kovacs, an elite fighter re-sleeved by a rich man named Laurens Bancroft who wants Kovacs to investigate a murder—Bancroft’s. This investigation happens amid a background of civil upheaval and conspiracy. It’s an intoxicating onscreen mix of intrigue, intelligence and action.

The source material is awesome and inspiring. Executive producer Laeta Kalogridis (she has previously written the screenplays for “Shutter Island” and “Terminator Genisys”) had worked to bring the novel to the screen since publication. “Morgan’s book is such a seminal sci-fi text. It’s a very serious sci-fi story about a technology that allows life to be extended indefinitely,” she said. “Yet in no way was the story removed from completely identifiable human emotions. It has all the bells and whistles of great sci-fi, but at its heart is a very human story. And it was noir, which I love.”
