Dyip eye ride to second win
Out to prove that its first victory last Sunday was no fluke, the Columbian Dyip takes on a Meralco squad eager to return to winning ways, while Phoenix makes its 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut on Wednesday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Unveiling a prized free agent pickup in Jerramy King, the team formerly known as Kia roared to a franchise record 12698 win over Blackwater for a positive start in the import-spiced conference.
But coach Ricky Dandan and his charges will have their hands full against the Bolts, who welcome Cliff Hodge and Jared Dillinger from injuries and import Arinze Onuako, the best import in the tournament two years ago.
“We’re up against a team that has been able to scout and prepare for us,” said Dandan, whose team’s 28-point win last Sunday set a franchise record for largest winning margin.
The Dyip’s 22 steals were also one shy of the league record, while King’s career-high 30 points was actually four more than his total output in nine games with Rain or Shine last year.
Raring to return to action, the Fuel Masters battle the Elite in the second game at 6:45 p.m. with coach Louie Alas hoping Phoenix’s early preparation will lead to a strong start.
Phoenix import James White, who played for Kia two seasons ago, was among the first reinforcements to arrive more than a month ago, giving Alas more time to integrate him into the Fuel Masters’ defense-oriented system.
“He’s a rim protector,” said Alas of the 6-foot-7 White. “He’s not an explosive scorer but he’s a very solid defender.”
The Phoenix coach however is wary of the Elite, whose lopsided loss to Columbian came as a shock as they are tipped to be among the contenders in the conference because of the presence of Jarrid Famous.
“I’m very sure they’re eager to bounce back,” said Alas of the Elite.
Dandan hopes new import CJ Aiken can stand his ground against the wide-bodied Onuaku, who averaged 18.7 points, 17.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 17 games for the Bolts two years ago.
“I’m hoping he becomes more aggressive against the other imports,” said Dandan of Aiken, who had nine points and 22 rebounds against the Elite.
