Remain in Jesus

Gospel: John 15: 1-8 “Remain in me as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.”

- BY BISHOP PRECIOSO D. CANTILLAS, SDB, DD

Jesus clearly states that for anyone to bear fruit in his life and work, the person must remain in Him. He is the vine and we are simply branches; as the branch lives and bear fruits while vitally attached to the vine, so do we, as long as we keep a vital union with Christ. United with Jesus, not merely in name, or through some Church’s records but through works of faith and love for Him and for others. This is the formula for true success and fulfilment in life here on earth and in the life after. It is important then to be always aware and active in our faith in the abiding and real presence of Jesus in our daily life.

Our daily work should not be an excuse for our failure to remain in Jesus. Rather, we can truly show our faith and love for Him by doing our daily tasks with great love and devotion for the Lord who gives us life and strength to do our jobs; we do well our respective work also for the love of others who would benefit from our work, by keeping always in mind their good and welfare more than our personal needs and interest. By thinking of Jesus’ presence in our co-workers and in other people wemeet and serve, we remain in contact with the Lord. Doing our work for Jesus who is present in others is our concrete way of staying united with Him, who assures us of sharing His love and power with us and within us. With Jesus’ love and power in us, we can bear abundant fruit for us and others to relish in this world and in the next.
