DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TOOK CENTER STAGE AT PIID TALK SHOW 2018: THE BAKWIT PROJECT
The Philippine Building and Construction Expo Davao (PHILBEX Davao) returned for its highly-anticipated 4th edition with an aim to unite the region’s construction and design industry in “Shaping Innovations Toward Sustainability”.
This year’s PHILBEX Davao focused on the mindful improvement of the region’s technologies along with the industry practices that address environmental concerns.
As part of its commitment to spark dialogue on issues of sustainable innovation, this year’s PHILBEX Davao took pride in hosting this year’s iteration of the PIID (Philippine Institute of Interior Designers) Talk Show which turned the spotlight on the organization’s latest endeavor, The Bakwit Project.
This initiative of the PIID VisMin Chapters was aimed at creating safe and comfortable spaces for evacuees in the event of a natural calamity.
The Bakwit Project involves five design renderings.
From PIID Cebu chapter, “Ugoy ng Duyan” was inspired by the concept of Bayanihan, in which, all materials to be used are lightweight, sustainable and easy to assemble.
Designed to withstand hostile conditions, the evacuation cart can provide enough comfort and privacy as it features essential in-house elements such as portable solar chargers, sustainable lamps and sleeping hammocks made from used denim, repurposed tarpaulins, rust proof metal tubes and repurposed market crates.
The “Bakwit Kit” by PIID Eastern Visayas chapter is a flat-packed evacuation kit contained in two boxes with ball casters for easy transportation. Inside, one can find PVC pipes, connectors for the freestanding frame, roller shades made of canvas, folding mattress, pillows and collapsible furniture.
Recognizing the importance of healing among victims of natural calamities or war, PIID Mindanao chapter came up with a design for a CISD (critical incident debriefing) room called “Paglaum” while the “Evacuation Bunker Kit” (EBK) by the PIID Negros chapter is presented as a compact box, which is easy to assemble and can provide proper shelter to a small family.
The “Learning Hub” by the PIID Panay chapter aids in the recovery and facilitation of learning. Once set up, the hub will reveal panels with tactile/sensory boards, a black board and an open/vacant wall for hanging visual aids.
Indeed, PHILBEX Davao affirmed its commitment to champion the importance of sustainable and innovative design in empowering the region’s construction industry and community.
