Proclaim the Gospel

- BY BISHOP PRECIOSO D. CANTILLAS, SDB, DD

The command Jesus gives to anyone who believes in Him and follows Him is to go and proclaim the gospel to everyone. Spreading the teachings and life of Jesus in word and in deed is a fundamental aspect of the life of a believer. Success and happiness of anyone who loves Jesus is measured by how much he/she shares with others the ways of Jesus; how greatly he/she inspires others to imitate the Lord. This is done not in great and spectacular acts, but in simple and ordinary duties in one’s daily life. Everyone, in whatever state of life he/she lives, can and should make the presence of Jesus felt by others through his life and work.

One’s daily work is the concrete way, time and place where one can proclaim the good news that Jesus is the person that shows, “the way the truth and the life” for the world and everyone. The way one does his job is what counts more than what one is doing. It is the good intention and the great love that the worker has in doing his job that makes his work meaningful and valuable for him and for others. Anything, including work, has both the good and the bad elements in it. The tendency of many is to put more weight on the negative side of things and not on the good and beautiful aspects. In work and in working, the worker needs to see more on the brighter and more meaningful side of his work and not be overcome by the burden, difficulties and other unpleasant matters of work. In fact, the worker should learn to even draw out the positive elements in situations and activities which are challenging or frustrating. The attitude of Jesus could inspire us to conquer evil with good, to transform the negative into a good news for us and others.
