Friends of Jesus

- BY BISHOP PRECIOSO D. CANTILLAS, SDB, DD

I once organized a club for young boys called, “Friends of Jesus”. Many joined the group and we tried to make Jesus our true friend, doing activities with faith and love for the One whom we considered as the Person who loves us and did everything, even dying on the Cross to save us from everlasting death. We wish to live and die as true friends of Jesus, so that we will be where He is, in the joy and glory of heaven.

Being a friend of Jesus means being one with Him with all of one’s being, mind, heart, body, et al. Friendship with Jesus does not involve only the big and great acts or moments of one’s life; oneness with the Lord happens in every time and place, especially in every minute detail in one’s life and work. In fact, Jesus being God and Lord, gives every creature, like us, the life and strength we are enjoying. This gift of life should be spent for the praise and glory of the Author of all life and not for our selfish interests only. Every act we do should be done as an act of friendship with the Giver of our life and energies. This would mean that we enjoy doing the tasks we need to do, as we would normally be happy to do something for someone we love and consider as dear friend. Our daily work then would be light and easy, meaningful and enjoyable, since we do it for a beloved. Our daily duties, big and small, tedious, fun or sometimes boring, become the proof of our friendship with Jesus. The beautiful thing is that Jesus never fails His friends, He provides true life and happiness for His friends.
