MIRIAM COLLEGE TEAMS QUALIFY FOR WORLD SCHOLARS CUP IN YALE

Nine teams from Miriam College qualified for the prestigiou­s World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions in Yale this year after excelling in different events at the recently concluded World Scholar’s Cup Kuala Lumpur Global Round 2018.

The nine are part of original 11 teams comprised of 33 students from Miriam College Middle School ( MCMS), High School (MCHS), and Nuvali (MC Nuvali).

They won a total of 119 gold medals, 84 silver medals, and 16 trophies after competing in the Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborat­ive Writing, Team Debate, and Scholar’s Bowl events.

MCMS teams gained the Isaac Asimov Trophy given to the top ranking team.

Team 208 composed of Middle School students Steffi De Chavez, Zoie Irasusta, and Maia Punzalan ranked First Place overall in the Skittles Division. Punzalan was awarded School Top Scholar, Top Scholar of the Southeast Asian region, and Top 1 overall Champion Scholar in the said division.

Irasusta was awarded the Isaac Asimov commemorat­ive trophy for achieving the highest total score of all six Scholar’s Challenge subjects of Literature, Social Studies, History, Art, Music, and Special Area.

The team was also awarded gold medals and trophies for being the No. 1 Debate Team and the second top Challenge Team.

Samantha Arcenas, Leica Cecilia, and Marie Anne Eloiza Beriña ranked first among the Challenge Teams and ninth place overall. Cecilia was also the Second Place scholar of the region.

In the Junior Jerries Division, Team 736 students Niesha Camacho, Monnica Carbonilla, and Alyssa Salazar won Fourth Place in the Scholar’s Bowl while Audrey Jamito was named School Top Scholar. The Middle School delegation is composed of three Skittles Division teams (12 and under) and four Junior Jerries Division teams (13-14 year-olds) that brought home a total of 96 gold medals, 46 silver medals, and 13 trophies.

Six of these teams qualified for the Tournament of Champions in Yale. The MS teams were coached by Emil Pandy and Patriluz Manongsong.
