WHYJOINANAUTO CLUB?

- By RIcardo S. Guevara Trustee, AAP

Why join an Auto Club, specifically the Philippine’s National Auto Club--the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP)?

The AAP provides multiple services, ranging from discounted car insurance to auto maintenance services, auto towing services, emergency roadside assistance, and fun stuff like touring the countryside in a caravan, and meeting and bonding with fellow members along the way.

More often than not, people sign up for AAP member- ship for the peace of mind it offers.

If your car breaks down, has a flat, gets involved in an accident, or simply won’t start, you’ll need help really quick.

With membership in AAP, you can have the security of knowing that free roadside assistance is just a phone call away. All the prior services mentioned are covered by your AAP membership through an annual membership fee.

So do you really need to join the AAP? Here’ are some questions you should answer yourself:

Do you think you could handle a situation as described above, even without a membership? What if the same thing happened to your teenage or college-age son or daughter?

Wouldn’t a membership give you added peace of mind while your child is on the road?

The AAP provides roadside assistance in ways other than towing services, in the form of jump starts, gas delivery and more. They can also change your tires and bring your car to your favorite repair shop or any of the many AAP accredited repair shops.

Here are some of the other benefits you get from AAP. AAP offers both domestic and foreign travel arrangements for its members, discounted hotel reservations, car rentals, and tour packages, plus access to AAP Travel-sponsored fly-and-drive caravans in the country. AAP also holds seminars on Road Safety, its primary advocacy.

Because of its affiliation with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Paris-based governing body for all four-wheel motor sport worldwide including Formula One and the World Rally Championship, AAP is the only auto club authorized to sanction and regulate motor sport events in the Philippines.

The future of AAP

Recognizing that a whole new generation is growing up with lesser need for car ownership, the AAP, through its annual participation in FIA Mobility Conferences, is coming up with ways to make membership relevant.

One of the many initiatives is helping its membership break the code on Crowd Mobility which includes ride hailing apps like Uber/Grab, advocating the use of car pooling, the push in legislation for better mass transportation, and, while it’s a far-off idea for now, realizing the eventual reality of autonomous mobility or driverless vehicles.

The Australian Automobile Association, another FIA member club, actually has a running Autonomous Public Utility vehicle, a driverless electric powered mini-bus, running for over a year now inside a specified route in the country. Now that’s the future!
