Kangaroo on breakfast menu? Rody jokes

- TINE O. AVENDAÑO —CHRIS-

The President said he did not attend Australia’s breakfast meeting at the recent Asean Summit because he skips early meals. “What will they serve … kangaroo?” he jested.

Kangaroo meat for breakfast?

Sounds unappetizing, if you ask President Duterte, who normally skips the first meal of the day anyway.

The President on Friday said he did not attend one of four meetings in the recent 33rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit because it entailed having breakfast.

Speaking to the Filipino community in Papua New Guinea, where he flew after the Asean summit ended, Mr. Duterte ex- plained his absence from the Asean-Australia meeting, where he was the lone Asean leader that did not show up.

Informal meeting

“I don’t understand Australia. They invited us for an 8:30 a.m. informal breakfast meeting. I told the soldiers [in his entourage], why would I attend when, first of all, I don’t eat breakfast. It’s true. I need sleep,” he said.

“What will they serve in the informal (breakfast), kanga- roo?” he jested, referring to the animal that is a symbol of Australia and appears in its coat of arms.

The President said he usually brought canned sardines, corned beef and dried fish to foreign trips because he was not a fan of buffet meals.

Aside from the Asean-Australia event, the President also skipped a special Asean meeting with South Korea, the working lunch for Asean leaders and the gala dinner.
