DUTERTE WANTS TO ARM PROSECUTORS

President Duterte is in favor of letting state prosecutors arm themselves to protect themselves from threats that may arise as a result of the performance of their duties.

The President said he valued the important role of prosecutors in the justice system, noting that prosecutors also face threats to their lives and their families.

To protect prosecutors

“I also encourage the leadership of the prosecutors’ league to work with the Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation and relevant agencies to come up with solutions on how to better protect our prosecutors and their families,” he said on Thursday night.

To the applause of the prosecutors, he added: “I’m ready for any suggestions, options. All are on the table. What do you want? Guns? I will allow it.”

Mr. Duterte made the remarks during the annual convention of the Prosecutors’ League of the Philippines in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Himself a former prosecutor and gun owner, the President even suggested to the prosecutors that they get the Glock 19 pistol since it is a maintenancefree weapon.

He added that he had always carried a gun since he was a prosecutor, since he felt naked without one.

“I suffered a strafing of my house, and all sorts… The wife and the children in a photograph sent to you. Those were the things that they wanted to do either coming from all sources. And profiling the targets, not them. So I know how difficult it is,” Mr. Duterte said.

Assassination

He admitted that a prosecutor’s job involved “antagonizing lawless elements, hardened criminals and their powerful backers.”

“The assassination of prosecutors across the country has highlighted the danger that prosecutors and their respective families have to endure,” the President said.

Mr. Duterte also hailed the state prosecutors for their unwavering commitment and support for the campaign against corruption, crime and illegal drugs.
