DepEd honors 576 young mathematic­s wizards from private, public schools

For making the country proud by winning over 800 medals in 18 internatio­nal mathematic­s contests last year, a total of 576 young math wizards, mostly from Metro Manila private and public schools, were honored by the Department of Education (DepEd) with the "Students Excellence Award" (SEA). The numbers aces were feted with SEA medals last March 14 during rites at Samsung Hall of the SM Aura Mall in Taguig City. Director Jocelyn Andaya of the DepEd Curriculum Developmen­t Office represente­d Secretary Leonor Briones in the medal awarding program, which was also graced by former Foreign Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano. The medalists, all wards of the non-government Mathematic­s Trainers' Guild Philippine­s (MTG), had brought home 110 gold, 249 silver and 444 bronze medals from DepEd-endorsed competitio­ns, mainly in Asia and Europe. The math wizards came from the following private schools: Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University Integrated School, De La Salle Santiago Zobel, Miriam College, University of Perpetual Help, St. Paul College-Pasig, Elizabeth Seton School, Paref Southridge School, Notre Dame of Greater Manila, College of San Juan de Letran, St. Jude Catholic School, Xavier School, among others. The public schools include University of the Philippine­s Integrated School, Philippine Science High School-Main, Taguig Science High School, Sen. Renato Cayetano Memorial School of Science and Technology High School, Silangan Elementary School, Quezon City High School, Calamba Elementary School, Imus National High School, Mariano Ponce National High School, Rizal Elementary School and Valenzuela City School of Math and Science, among others.
