6 ISLANDS WORTH VISITING IN THAILAND
Aside from Thailand’s cultural and historical landmarks, rich cuisine and sweeping landscapes, its coastline is also home to some of the world’s most pristine and serene beaches.
Some islands to consider:
Railay Beach
This isolated peninsula in Krabi province is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. One of the must-try activities is the Four Islands Tour. Railay Beach is also a rock climber’s paradise.
Phuket Island
This is Thailand’s biggest island with more than 30 beaches. Patong boasts pristine white sand. Its bustling nightlife includes restaurants, bars and night clubs. Should you prefer quiet time, Freedom Beach has only one restaurant and none of the typical water activities in other beaches.
Hua Hin
Situated on the western side of the Gulf of Thailand two hours away from Bangkok, Hua Hin is a hub for a real Thai experience. Have a taste of 100-percent authentic Thai cuisine in one of the over-water restaurants. It is also home to the top kitesurfing beach in Thailand. Along the beaches, there are several schools to help you get started on conquering the waves through kitesurfing.
Coral Island
This serene island 3 kilometers off Phuket is for snorkeling or scuba diving adventures. It is home to beautiful coral reefs. There are canoe or banana boat rides. There are batik classes to learn traditional ways of fabric designs.
Cha-Am
A clutter-free destination a few hours from Bangkok, ChaAm is tranquility defined via a sunrise stroll or a Thai massage under a parasol. Cha-Am’s long coastline creates a picture-perfect backdrop for a range of activities including pony rides, banana boat rides, water-skiing, windsurfing and parasailing.
Koh Lanta
Condé Nast Traveler chose Koh Lanta—which is actually made of little islands—as the “Best Island in Thailand for when you can’t make up your mind.” Whether traveling solo, with family, or with a group of friends, there is something for you to try: beach bars, worldclass diving sites, kayaking at a mangrove forest and seafood tom yum.
