Today, Oct. 24, is the 145th birth anniversar­y of statesman, educator and historian Rafael Palma. Born in 1874 in Tondo, Manila, Palma joined the La Independen­cia, the official newspaper of the revolution, and founded the El Renacimien­to. He later entered politics and was elected an assemblyma­n, then as a senator. In 1917, he was also appointed to the Cabinet as interior secretary. He also served as president of the University of the Philippine­s from 1925 to 1933. He died on May 24, 1939. —MARIELLE MEDINA, INQUIRER RESEARCH
