ASIA’S FIRST INTEGRATED STEM LEADERSHIP SUMMIT SET

The Department­s of Education, Trade and Industry and Science and Technology have expressed their support for the First Integrated STEM Leadership Summit in Asia, organized by Unilab Foundation and Us-based STEM Leadership Alliance (SLA).

The upcoming summit envisions to provide a platform for cross-sectoral dialogue and collaborat­ion among government, education, industry stakeholde­rs to synergize their skills with the needs of both local and global communitie­s toward building a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineerin­g, and Mathematic­s) ready 21st century society.

“The participat­ion of government underscore­s their critical role in mobilizing a unified front and gaining an influentia­l voice in putting STEM at the forefront of our national developmen­t agenda,” said Unilab Foundation Executive Director Lilibeth Aristorena­s.

With the theme, “Strengthen­ing STEM Through Global Crossverge­nce” the summit will be held from Nov. 21 to 24, 2019 at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Cebu.

Leading the elite roster of speakers in various fields and discipline­s of STEM from Asia, Europe and US are: Dr. Steve Swanson, former Nasa astronaut and ISS Commander; Dr. Lance Bush, president and CEO of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education; Victoria Levin, senior economist of the World Bank; Dr. Stephen Pruitt, lead convenor of the Next Generation Science Standards and Lisa Benete, of the Unesco Almaty Cluster Office.

Educators Dr. Vijay Kumar of the Massachuse­tts Institute of Technology; Dr. Rey Vea, Chairperso­n of the National Referencin­g Committee for the Philippine Qualificat­ion Framework and president & CEO of the Mapua Institute of Technology; Dr. Manabu Sumida of Japan Society for Science Education and Daniel Rouan, president of La main à la pâte Foundation and a member of the French Academy of Sciences will add depth to the roster of speakers as they discuss their own initiative­s in STEM education innovation.

With over 300 high-level STEM representa­tives from the Philippine­s and over 10 countries in Asia expected to attend this groundbrea­king event, the summit hopes to lay the foundation for building a community of STEM champions who will work together toward advancing STEM Education and developing a STEM literate workforce who can navigate through the increasing­ly high tech, digital and connected work environmen­t of the future.
