FASHION DESIGN TEACHERS PRODUCE REUSABLE PPE
The Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) program of De La Salle-college of Saint Benilde will produce reusable personal protective equipment (PPE) to be donated to health facilities battling the new coronavirus disease.
From the donation of 2,000 yards of fabric by Weaves of Asia, a specialty textile supplier, FDM will make jumpsuits, lab gowns, and head and foot covers.
“We intend to provide these to small public hospitals in the provinces such as those in Cavite, Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Batanes,” said FDM chair Christine Benet.
Designs follow standards set by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute, which works with the University of the Philippines-philippine General Hospital.
“The scraps of the repellent and nonrepellent fabrics are made into masks sewn by our senior students as they have expressed their willingness to be a part of the initiative,” Benet said.
Some 4,500 face masks are expected to be produced.
FDM said it was accepting donations in cash and in kind such as fabric, garter, Velcro, ballpoint needles, and polyester and nylon threads. It also needed more volunteers to produce and package the PPE.
