DUTERTE CALLS FOR PEACE, SOLIDARITY AS MUSLIMS OBSERVE RAMADAN

President Duterte has called on Filipinos to help the less fortunate and promote solidarity by fostering peace, hope and unity as he marked the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Mr. Duterte said the nation joins its Muslim brothers and sisters in commemorating the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammad.

He also said the period of fasting during Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, reminded people of the value of sacrifice, obedience and charity.

“As we mark this holy occasion, I ask everyone to promote solidarity among all Filipinos by manifesting faith through action and by fostering peace, hope and unity as we face the most challenging of times,” he said.

“Let us all come together and channel the spirit of Ramadan by helping those who are less fortunate and most in need,” he added.

He hoped for Filipinos to move forward with courage, hope and optimism as the blessings of Ramadan bring peace and prosperity to the nation.

April 13 is the official start of Ramadan, a month where Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and abstain from sensual pleasures and sinful acts.

It is also a period of reflection and renewal of faith.

The observance of Ramadan this year takes place as the country remains in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has seen a recent surge of infections, which prompted the government to put Metro Manila and four nearby provinces under the strictest lockdown level for two weeks, closing down many businesses and sources of livelihood.
