Russell Westbrook
“I’m very happy for you,” came the accolade from NBA great Oscar Robertson as he greeted Russell Westbrook after the Washington Wizard point guard broke the Big O’s record for the most career triple-doubles. The historic moment came in the fourth quarter of the Wizards’ match against the Atlanta Hawks. Westbrook grabbed his 10th rebound of the game for his 182nd career T-D, edging the legendary Robertson, who retired as a Buck in 1974 with 181. “I salute you for all your accomplishments in the game of basketball,” Robertson added. The old record was once deemed unbreakable, right next to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, and stayed untouched even by another, flashier super guard, Magic Johnson (who ended up logging 138). Even the current “all-time great” contender LeBron James has only 99 triple-doubles so far. Fans started taking notice of Westbrook’s chances of shattering Robertson’s mark in 2017, when he tallied the most T-D’s in a season with 42. “I’m truly grateful for moments like this. Normally, I don’t like to pat myself on the back, but tonight I will,” he said.
