Andrea Torres and Kylie Padilla turn their pain into art
Andrea Torres and Kylie Padilla have a common denominator. They are both breakup survivors. More than just surviving heartbreak, the Kapuso network hotties are flourishing.
Now that they are single again, Andrea and Kylie are celebrating their newfound freedom by daring to do something they have never done. The two beauties had no qualms about portraying a lesbian couple in Rein Entertainment’s “BetCin” (coming soon on iflix.ph and wetvphilippines).
Kylie plays Beth, while Andrea portrays Cindy. Just as “vetsin” adds flavor to dishes, BetCin is spicing up the careers of the two leading ladies. To quote their Instagram posts:
Andrea : Ubos na ba? Wala bang natira sa tayong dalawa? Matagal-tagal din tayong sumaya. (Is there nothing left for us? We were happy for so long.)
Kylie: Isisigaw ang ngalan mo’t magpapakalunod sa pulang kabayo. Tamaan ka naman, oh, pusong hindi makapagpaalam. (I will scream your name and get drunk on Red Horse. Let it reach my heart, which cannot say goodbye.)
Nope, those intriguing posts are not for their exes, Derek Ramsay and Aljur Abrenica. Those lines are meant for Beth and Cindy. Talk about turning pain into art. Oh, how Andrea and Kylie have recycled their hearts.
Here’s my chat with Andrea: In what ways are you like Cindy?
I was quite experimental in terms of fashion when I was younger. I’d totally wear her clothes if I could right now. Cindy has big dreams and believes she can make a difference in the world. She really wants to succeed in life, and you can see that hunger in her. I have that in my heart, too.
What did your movie make you realize about lesbian romance?
We all love the same way and go through the same things whatever gender we identify with. That’s one of the reasons why I said yes to this project—right away, literally! Minutes into the script, I fell in love with their love story. Their dynamic is both entertaining and relatable.
How did you and Kylie shake off the awkwardness prior to your intimate scenes?
It’s amazing how comfortable we were. I guess we’re already Beth and Cindy the moment we reported to our lock-in shoot. No nervousness at all. All our intimate scenes—yes, there are more than one—were done in one take, and we’re very happy with how all the scenes turned out.
Since Kylie is fresh from a breakup, what advice would you give her about moving forward?
Kylie is a strong woman, and I can see she has it all figured out. She was such a joy to be with on set. The perfect leading lady for me (laughs)! We talked, and I think she’s got everything under control. I’m proud of her. She matured a lot since the last time I saw her.
What made you decide to accept the project even if it required you to step out of your comfort zone?
First of all, I’m always open to do roles that are out of the box. I want to keep surprising people and offer them different sides of me. It is so well-written. You know they were inspired when they wrote it. The flavor they gave this one is fresh.
Also, I want to be part of a project that I know will have a positive effect. It will give people more awareness and appreciation for the LGBTQ+ community. They deserve to be represented this way. “BetCin” is for everyone. It’s a feel-good series. It’s light and funny, but we also injected moments where you’ll feel that sting in your heart.
‘69 + 1’: Ménage à trois, Pinoy style
It’s ménage à trois, Pinoy style, in Darryl Yap’s “69 + 1” (streaming on Vivamax beginning Sept 3). It is top-billed by Maui Taylor, Rose Van Ginkel and Janno Gibbs. True to form, the avant-garde director explores yet another taboo topic: “throuple” (three for a couple) or a polyamorous relationship.
The sex comedy is about a lesbian couple who allows a man into their relationship to manage the so-called sevenyear-itch. There comes a point in every couple’s life when they have to find out whether their love is only good until it “lusts.”
Here are quotes from Maui (M), Rose (R) and Janno (J):
M: We always want excitement in our relationships. But when you are in a polyamorous relationship, you will question if it’s love or just lust. I guarantee that you’ll want to fall in love again after watching our film.
J: A three-way relationship is hard to balance. You will tend to love one more than the other. If I was still single, I would be open to having a polyamorous relationship.
R: Since it’s sort of my launching film, I had to shake off my being starstruck with Maui and Janno. They made it easy for me.
M: For me, size does not matter. It’s the performance level that counts. I would rather sleep with a plain-looking guy who’s good in bed than a handsome one who’s lousy in it. Pipikit nalang ako and imagine he’s gwapo (laughs).
J: Our movie will shed light on lesbian relationships. My naughtiness leveled up in this film. But there was no malice in me while doing our threesome scenes. Paano ko lalagyan ng malisya eh ang daming ilaw at crew na nanonood?
That’s where respect for my leading ladies comes in. Some netizens were shocked at our trailer because we used the Tagalog word for f*ck. But in Hollywood movies, they use the F word a lot, and it’s no big deal.
R: I’m the jealous type, so a polyamorous relationship won’t work for me.
