WE VISITED THE SET OF 'MONEY HEIST'

- By Pam Pastor

We visit the set of “Money Heist” Part 5—well, virtually.

With Luka Peros (yes, Marseille) as our guide, we got to see the costume department (so many red jumpsuits!), hear about set secrets and have a glimpse of the cast members.

Costume designer Carlos Díez said, “We have to have all the costumes—even from previous seasons—in case the writers want to do a flashback to something that happened in Episode 1 of Season 2.” Each actor has at least eight jumpsuits. “One is clean, one may have some dirt marks, one may have dirt all over it, one may have blood, more blood, a lot more …” he said. But Díez’s favorite is the tiniest: the one Sofia the ferret wore in Season 3 which Díez made by hand. (Another trivia: That ferret was a biter.)

Those Salvador Dalí masks are custom-made to fit their faces.

Díez also showed Nairobi’s jewelry. “One thing is missing. It is the monocle that Nairobi always carried around with her, which she used to check the watermarks on money … We don’t have it because Alba (Flores) was very fond of that and she keeps it like it was treasure.”

Inside the set of the Bank of Spain, art director Abdón Alcañiz said, “It’s a project that is alive, with a massive visual construction. The screenwriters ... They’re going to drive us crazy. Or we already are.”

Peros asked Alcañiz if it breaks his heart when scriptwriters decide to blow up his creations. He replied, “As a character in the series says: ‘Party? Well, let’s party!’ Go for it and blow it all up ... let’s go for it!”

The next time you watch “Money Heist,” take note of the library—every book color was painstakingly chosen. “Imagine my colleagues buying books all over Madrid according to color.” But the books on the higher floors are fake. “They’re fake books to take weight off the floor. It’s not

only aesthetics, you also play

with physics,” said Alcañiz.

Another thing to check out? The portraits. The set design people have fun with them. “We have colleagues like Paco, the alderman; Moscow, the dead guy ... We play games with each other. Even my face is up there.”

At the time of the set visit, Álvaro Morte, who plays The Professor, still didn’t know how the

series ends. And even if he did, he wouldn’t tell. “They would cut my throat,” he said. “What I can tell you is that it is a season with a lot of tension, a lot of action, and it’s very exciting.”

The first half of “Money Heist” Part 5 will start streaming on Netflix on Sept. 3, with the second half coming on Dec. 3.
