Pablo ‘Gavi’ Gavira

-

Spain’s midfielder Pablo “Gavi” Gavira became the third youngest player ever to score a goal in a World Cup match, putting him high on a list currently topped by the Brazilian football legend Pelé. Gavi caught a cross from teammate Álvaro Morata in the 74th minute of their match against Costa Rica on Nov. 24. The teenager struck the ball with the outside of his right boot, sending it past three Costa Rican defenders and their goalie, before giving Spain its fifth goal. The FC Barcelona prodigy was 18 years and 110 days old when he pulled that one off. Pelé holds the record of being the youngest World Cup scorer, a feat he achieved in 1958 when he was 17 years and 249 days old. Second on the list is Mexico’s Manuel Rosas, who was 18 years and 93 days old when he scored in the 1930 World Cup. “I know I’m the youngest in the team and I respect everyone, but on the field it’s different and I bring out my best. I’m proud to be in that podium,” Gavi said. Gavira also became the youngest to play for Spain in a major international tournament.
