How to beat the holiday rush

- BOTCHI SANTOS

The holidays always bring about intense carmageddon, which can easily sour the sweet vibes of the Yuletide Season. Here are some simple tips and tricks you and I can practice to help avoid and beat the crazy traffic!

1) Work from home if possible.

The best way to avoid traffic is avoid driving. Working from home saves you so much time, effort and gas money so if you can stay put, make use of that option.

2) Leave work or home at odd hours.

If your work allows ‘flexitime,’ you can avoid the crazy rush hour traffic jam. Rush hour is usually from 7:30 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 8 pm. If you can avoid traveling at these times, you save yourself from so much stress and become more productive.

3) Online shopping is key. There are so many online shopping platforms which allow you to shop at your convenience anytime, anywhere. Just add to cart!

4) Shop during the week, avoid the malls and markets on the weekend .

An easy hack, why go shopping when everyone else is going? Less people means more time, less risk for catching any disease and greater available stocks or selection of goods, and parking will be easier and more convenient, too!

5) Carpool or commute especially when going to places with difficult parking.

Save yourself the hassle of driving and finding parking, not to mention stress, plus fuel savings by carpooling or even commuting on short trips and errands. You can work, catch up and reply on messages, emails and many other things as a passenger, rather than as the driver. Plus, you save time by not having to find parking once you arrive at your destination.

6) Try to schedule errands and trips in the evening when traffic is lighter.

Another no-brainer, driving at night when it’s cooler means you avoid traffic, have an easier time finding parking, and because the nights are cooler, cars are more efficient. Your fuel savings increase further by avoiding traffic and having a more fuel efficient engine.

7) Instead of going yourself, make use of the various courier services to send or retrieve personal effects.

This happens when you need to send or retrieve documents and personal effects but end up wasting so much time, energy, effort and money for such a simple task. There are so many courier services available to the general public, it’s easier to book them anytime, anywhere through your phones rather than going out to drive and contribute to the congestion on the road.

At the end of the day, we want to avoid stress and hassle while saving a few pesos by avoiding unnecessary fuel expenses, too. Simply follow these simple traffic beating hacks and you’ll enjoy the holidays better.
