MONTBLANC’S HOMAGE TO VAN GOGH

- By William Herrera

Montblanc recently showcased its latest collection, the new Montblanc Masters of Art Collection that honors great artists and their contributions to the arts. Succeeding the Montblanc Patron of Art Collection, the Masters of Art Collection spotlights the artists whose work includes a wide range of disciplines, from paintings, sculptures, architecture, and design; from the Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, and so much more. Montblanc has meticulously ensured that the proportions of each and every writing instrument in the Masters of Art Collection adheres to the golden ratio; more commonly known as Phi, or 1.61, producing a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing writing instrument. Each limited edition 161 will feature an embossed Phi symbol on its handcrafted, solid Au 750 gold nib.

The Montblanc Masters of Art collection’s first edition is a tribute to the visionary Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh is renowned as one of the most popular painters of the 19th century, his work is considered as the precursors to modernism. Van Gogh will be honored with five limited edition writing instruments, drawing inspiration from the Dutch painters works. Montblanc is working closely with the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam to ensure that the Masters of Art Collection align with the museum’s insight to his work and life; the Van Gogh Museum acts as the guardian of Vincent van Gogh’s heritage. Housing the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s, numbering over 200 paintings, and nearly 500 drawings, and 700 or more letters, the Van Gogh museum, which celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, continues to inspire countless artists and fans with the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries.

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Vincent van Gogh path of self-discovery began in 1869 as an apprentice to an art dealer, Vincent then pursued his love for art in 1880, by becoming a full-time artist. His initial works showcases the rural life around him before his move to Paris in 1886, afterwards, Vincent began experimenting with colors and techniques inspired by Impressionism. Van Gogh breathed life into his works by way of his bold use of color, dramatic brushstrokes, and the impasto technique, where he applied paint thickly to his canvass, creating depth, emotion and movement. In just a decade, Vincent van Gogh created over 800 paintings and more than 1,100 drawings and sketches.
