Create a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere at homewith aromatic soy candles

- By Kenneth M. del Rosario

Next time you need a change of mood at home, light a candle.

Aromatic candles have become quite popular because of the pleasant and relaxing atmosphere they create in any room. They add a wonderful but not too overpowering fragrance to your home. Candles create a warm glow—a cozy and intimate atmosphere.

Notice how aromatic candles are used prominently in spas? That’s because they have a calming effect, thanks to their healing properties. Plus, the act of lighting a candle instantly helps ease and soothe the mind.

“Candles can definitely affect your mood. For instance, there are food scents that can sort of make you feel hungry. Other fragrances, like cedarwood, are ideal to relieve tension. There are spicy scents such as ginger or clove, or citrus aromas like lemon or grapefruit, that are recognized as having invigorating properties,” said Opalyn Nubla, owner of Scenthérapie.

Scenthérapie is a newly launched company that uses 100 percent pure and hand-poured soy candle wax. This is their first venture in the Philippines after having success in Melbourne (with their Christmas scents) as well as in Los Angeles (with candles and room scents for a church project).

While soy candles are environment-friendly, it’s not readily top-of-mind compared to buying room sprays or diffusers when it comes to bringing aroma at home. This is probably because of the notion that candles add more warmth in the room.

However, soy candles are starting to gain mainstream acceptance, thanks to a much “cleaner burning,” which means there are no toxins or pollutants. Because it’s natural, biogradable, and sustainable, it doesn’t trigger alergens. Scentherapie candles are locally made with materials sourced from Australia and the US.

While there are many types of aromatic candles, the ones made of soy have many advantages (over, say, the ones made of paraffin).

“Soy candles last longer (about 30 to 50 percent more) because of the slower burning time and cooler burning temperature of the soybean-based wax. They also hold on more to the scent of essential oils. Soy candles release scent gradually, so there is no immediate wave of strong scent. This creates a more pleasant and natural atmosphere,” she said.

Scenthérapie currently offers five scents: Sweet Embrace, Fresh Brew, Star Gaze, Quiet Moment and Angel Kiss. The brand will also be releasing a limited edition candle with Tessa Prieto-Valdes called Mermaid’s Tale this December.

Nubla said: “Our candles will always be 100 percent pure soy, hand-poured and handmade with love. We plan to release more candle scents and room sprays in the future and also make available some candle accessories and tools such as bell covers, candle snuffer, wax melter, wick trimmers.”
